Attack EC offices – Mahama directs NDC supporters

In what could be toxic for the nation’s democracy, if left unchecked, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has given full backing to the party’s directive to its supporters to attack the Electoral Commission (EC) offices across the country on September 17 if the commission fails to accept the party’s demand to audit the voter register.

Addressing a gathering of NDC supporters at Sampa in the Jaman North District of the Bono Region yesterday, Mr Mahama rallied them to take the violent action to ensure that their demands are met before the December 7 elections.

On Monday, September 9, the NDC national chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, just after presenting John Mahama’s nomination forms to the EC for the December 7 elections, announced that the party supporters would stage demonstrations and attack EC offices across the country on September 17, if the commission fails to subject the voters register to an independent audit.

Delivery
While speaking at Sampa, Mr Mahama said the voters register is defective. According to him, if Ghanaians want free, fair, and peaceful elections, then the EC must improve its delivery.

Mr Mahama further explained that the siege of the EC offices would pump sense into the heads of the EC to do what is in his estimation, the right thing. “So I am urging you all to take note that on the 17th of this month, NDC is going to demonstrate in every town that has an EC office. Our chairman has announced it”, he stated.

He encouraged them to wear their t-shirts and carry any other materials they deem proper and enter the EC offices to pour out their venom in order to put pressure on the EC to accede to the party’s request.
