Nana Romeo Calls for Scrapping Independence Day Celebrations, Says Ghana Is Not Truly Independent

Ghanaian media personality Nana Romeo has questioned the relevance of Ghana’s Independence Day celebrations, stating that the country remains dependent on foreign nations and lacks basic amenities, making the annual event unnecessary.

Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz on Saturday, March 8, 2025, the Accra FM presenter shared his belief that Ghana is not truly independent, as it still relies on other countries for essential goods and services.

“I’m part of the very few people who don’t believe in the Independence Day celebration. I don’t think we are independent because we still depend on other countries for everything, including toothpick,” he said. “I don’t think celebrating Independence Day is needful. It’s best we stop celebrating it.”

Nana Romeo further expressed concern about Ghana’s underdevelopment despite being rich in natural resources. He lamented the poor state of roads, the lack of streetlights, and other basic amenities, questioning why the country invests time and resources into marking Independence Day when such pressing issues remain unresolved.

While he acknowledged the government’s decision to cut costs on this year’s celebration, he suggested that the funds could have been better spent on essential needs such as hospital beds and streetlights.

”The government did well by cutting down costs on this year’s celebration; however, it would have been better if the money was used for something more beneficial, such as hospital beds and streetlights. I think Ghana’s independence exists on paper but not in reality, so there is no need to celebrate,” he stressed.
