Tensions Flare in Mampong: Northern NDC Backers Vow to Block Asante MCE

Supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Asante Mampong, primarily individuals of northern descent, have vowed to ensure that a person of northern origin, rather than an Asante native is nominated as Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the area. “No Asante will become Mampong MCE. We want a northerner,” they yelled out.

Their agitation intensified when they caused significant damage to the party office, claiming to have information that the President had nominated Esther Dwomoh, an Asante native, for the role.

Select Northerner
The supporters argue that a northerner should be appointed as MCE for Asante Mampong.
They pointed out that three individuals—Yakubu Yakubu, the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for 2024; the current Constituency Chairman, Mohammed Kamil; and Imoro Iddrisu—were shortlisted following the vetting process, insisting that one of them should be nominated for the position.

Agitation
Kwaku Bernasko, the Asante Mampong Constituency Communications Officer for the NDC, confirmed the incident. He stated, “A group of youth is agitating over a rumour that the nominee for the Mampong MCE position is a woman named Esther Dwomoh.

“They came to the party office to express their displeasure to the party executives present. We couldn’t control the crowd, and party property such as chairs and tables was broken and set on fire in front of the office.”

Condemnation
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation on social media, with one commenter questioning, “Can these people name one Asante man who has ever been MCE in any of the northern regions of Ghana?”
