Over 100,000 BECE candidates in Mahama’s era denied access to SHS – Napo

The vice running-mate of the New Patriotic (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opuku Prempeh has called on Ghanaians not to trust the Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama promise of reviewing the Free Senior High Policy.

According to him, Mahama has no good intention for Ghanaian children because available data from 2013 to 2016, during his era indicates that over 100,000 Ghanaian children each year were denied access to Senior High School (SHS) in the country.

The over 100,000 children though passed their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and qualified, could not continue to SHS due to financial constraints,

But since the introduction of the Free Senior High School policy under the NPP government, these cost barriers have been removed, giving 5.7 million young people the opportunity to receive education, regardless of their circumstances at birth.

It is therefore disheartening that “If a presidential candidate of the NDC claims he will ‘reset’ Ghana, what he is really suggesting is a return to the time when 100,000 children each year were left in hopelessness and despair.”

“This is why, earlier this afternoon in the Upper West Akim constituency, I urged party faithful and all Ghanaians to campaign and vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to protect this transformative and equalising policy.

“I also believe that the people will re-elect Hon. Frederick Obeng Adom to Parliament,” Dr. Prempeh stated.
